UnCertain: A Look at Spring 2020 –
Website + Data Visualization

Role: Web Interface Design, p5. JS Development

Overview:

In the spring of 2020, SARS-CoV-2 impacted our way of life as a global pandemic. As life began to transition from in-person to virtual, our Creative Coding class began collecting information from students at Temple University to document and visualize changes in emotions, headlines, and mindsets within this brief and uncertain time period.

We collaborated as a team with specific roles in developing the various UI and UX elements of the site. Team members began with researching and surveying students, then organizing a vast spreadsheet of responses, and finally implementing the data in a visually impactful and interactive website.

Research

To gather our data, we sent a survey to students and faculty each week and asked to identify emotions, adjustments in daily life, education, and concerns. These were measured each week and visualized through the website. News headlines from each week were collected as key points during this tumultuous and unprecedented time.

 CODING AND WEBSITE DESIGN

As a team, we designated roles to each designer including user-research, design, interaction between the timeline and graph, and implementing each element into the final website.

After collecting the user responses, we met as a team to concept the visual design, logo, web structure and type.

Final Results

The site features an interactive timeline, scrolling news headlines, quotes, and an animating logo. As you click on each date, the graph changes corresponding to responses from the week. The logo alternates each second between different adjectives describing the disbelief of the events.
